iBEAM™
Optical Timepiece
FACTS-AT-A-GLANCE
DESCRIPTION:
The iBEAM Optical Timepiece is a wristwatch with a patented pop-up
magnifying lens and a built-in LED flashlight. The lens and light are
subtly incorporated into a beautiful watch suitable for business and
dressy occasions. Beneath the scratch-resistant magnifier, a second,
sealed crystal keeps the watch water resistant to 90 feet.
USES:
The iBEAM watch is especially ideal for anyone experiencing difficulty
reading small print. The lens-light combination aids the reading of menus,
theater programs, and other text in low-light venues. The magnifier can
also be used alone when reading small text such as labels, phone books,
and instruction manuals; the flashlight can be used alone to illuminate
key holes, walkways, or any dark area.
HOW IT WORKS:
A tiny microchip imbedded in the watchcase allows for hands-free operation
of the flashlight after an initial push of a button on the side of the
watch. Push the button again to turn the light off, or a battery-saving
device shuts it off automatically after 30 seconds. The magnifying lens
pops up with the touch of a separate small button.

BACKGROUND
The iBEAM Optical
Timepiece—with its patented pop-up magnifying lens and built-in LED
flashlight—was invented to help people read small print more easily,
even in low-light situations. Inventor Chris McKay, a baby boomer, had
always had perfect vision, but found himself occasionally borrowing his
wife's reading glasses to read the dinner bill or a business card. He
didn't need help all the time, but those times when he couldn’t make out
the fine print were very frustrating.
Then, while riding a train
in Hong Kong, McKay was struck with inspiration. Sitting across from him
was a man looking at a stone through a jeweler’s loop. The light from
the train flashed on the man’s watch crystal, and a thought flashed
through McKay’s mind: “He doesn’t need a separate lens; he’s got
one right on his wrist. Why couldn’t a lens be built into his watch that
could pop-up and magnify?”
By 2000, McKay
had secured his first U.S. patent for the magnifying lens and licensed the
feature to other manufacturers. Three more patents and two years later, he
put the finishing touches on the lens and flashlight combination. iBEAM
Technologies, Inc. was incorporated in early 2004, with Chris as Chairman.
The company,
headquartered in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, now sells four different
versions of the watch through catalogs and online retailers, such as
Infinity Marketing. The watch is marketed to all those who have difficulty
reading small print, including the 78 million baby boomers, and to anyone
who appreciates a handy tool.
The flashlight
feature can be used with the magnifying lens to illuminate text in
low-light venues such as theaters or dimly-lit restaurants, or it can be
used simply as a flashlight in the dark.

TESTIMONIALS
Consumers and
retailers love the iBEAM watch. Here are just a few of the rave reviews:
“I have ten
watches and since I received the iBEAM, it’s the only watch I wear.”
John Magusa
Spring Lake, Michigan
“While working
at my office one afternoon, we experienced a power outage. A full
blackout. There were no window shades or doors to open to get sunlight,
because I work in the basement of our company. I remembered after a few
minutes of darkness that I was wearing an iBEAM watch. I pressed the light
button on and guided a co-worker and I out of our office to safety. Thanks
iBEAM, you'll be on my wrist forever.”
Norbert Castro, USPS Business Service Network, Bay Valley District
San Jose, California
“At first I
didn’t think I needed it. Now I depend on it all the time. I just pop
the lens and I can check the tiny serial numbers on our stock. And I
wouldn’t know what to do without the flashlight feature, especially
having to go in the back of equipment and plug in connectors. It’s with
me all the time. It’s my emergency kit.”
Dan Royer, Electrician
Danville, California
“…I popped
open the lens, used the sun the heat up and seal the patch, put my tire
back on, and rode out of there.
Jeff Martin, Mountain Biker
Lake Tahoe, California
“A lot of my
sales are from one person who sees it and then buys up five or six for his
or her friends as presents. They go fast!”
Retailer
Scottsdale, Arizona
“We get people
from all over the world visiting [our shop], and everyone gravitates to
the iBEAM. You don’t need to know the language, they all get what it’s
for…they have a good laugh.”
